Chapter two
Four hours before Jack leaves for London
The team will arrive soon. The day is coming, dissipating with it the soft sigh and the warm dream that night brought with it. Ianto sits up on the edge of the bed, hesitantly running a hand through his hair, his naked body barely awake. He has to get dressed and climb the ladder to go upstairs and make the coffee, to forget that beside him a beautiful life lies naked and full of desire. He closes his eyes, the happiness almost a curse, he doesn’t know how to deal with it anymore. A strong hand caresses his back, and his whole body reacts, it’s totally awake now.
“Stay…”
“I can’t…. I…… It’s too soon Jack…”
Then, soft lips caress his neck, arms hug him and his head falls on to the other man’s shoulder.
“I’ll be waiting Ianto… my beautiful Ianto…”
The day is now there, the shadows that have been secretly waiting in the dark embrace the young man, squeeze slowly in his mind. He dresses rapidly, in the same clothes from yesterday, but nobody will care.
Twelve hours after Jack departure
On Tosh’s work station a glass bowl stands. The object looks innocuous, no signs at all that it could be dangerous. Owen and Gwen found it during a weevil hunt, beside three weevil’s bodies, barely even two hours ago. The bodies weren’t mutilated, no signs of any violence, they looked more as if they were asleep.
“Maybe we should call Jack about this.”
“I agree with Tosh, it could be dangerous. What do you think Ianto?”
“I don’t know. We shouldn’t disturb Jack in his meeting just for a glass bowl…”
Then, a sarcastic laugh explodes in the medical bay.
“What tea boy? You don’t want to disturb your dear captain? That is interesting…”
“I’m not a pain in the arse like you Owen …” Whispers the young man angrily.
“Ok, stop it, you are both being ridiculous. We are all exhausted. Ianto you stay here for the night and call me if you see any changes or rift activity. Everyone else? Let’s go home.”
Nobody protests, they just nod with a calm resignation. The day has been awful to them, rift activities, weevils hunting and their captain’s absence creating a tension between the teammates. In the now silent Hub, Ianto relaxes for the first time that day. His eyes close, his head on the back of the couch. He’s so exhausted; he should go in Jack’s bed, just for an hour or two, for a little nap. But he has to check the rift, the bowl, the hub. He can’t fail his duties, he has to protect the world, he has to be strong. But he’s so fatigued, his head is so heavy. Then slowly, sleep takes him into it’s arms. A few moments later, in the silent and dark hub, the glass bowl begins to turn on by itself. More and more rapidly, the bowl turns on sitting on Tosh’s work station, it looks as if it is about to fly. On the couch, the young man sleeps, unconscious of the potential danger nearby. However, in the morning, when he wakes up, the bowl will stand in the same place, unmoved. But, only a few hours afterwards, when Gwen and Owen are outside to investigate some rift activity, the bowl will move again, and then, Toshiko and Ianto will be the perfect victims.
One hour before Jack returns
Gwen Cooper breathes loudly, her heart beating rapidly; she can feel the panic build inside her. She squeezes her gun, she’s alone and she’s scared. They seems to be everywhere in the Hub, but she doesn’t understand how they could get in. When Owen and she arrived back six hours ago, they found Tosh on the ground, covered in blood, unconscious. Ianto was nowhere to be seen. Everything looked normal, but the silence was all wrong, something bad had happened. They took care of Tosh. But, after a moment a noise had begin to resonate in the place. First, gently, like feet steps. Then, more and more loudly, like they were being attacked. She yelled at Owen, but he ignored her. He told her something about the fucking tea boy and ran away, leaving her alone with a useless Toshiko. Now, she just wants to cry, she walks on through the basement, the tunnels are dark around her. The noises are so loud, she can hear nothing else, she fears that she is going to die, but not without fighting she thinks. She shoots hysterically, nobody has the right to break into the hub, but she will fight until the end.
On the roof
Three men stand on a roof. One has a gun in his hand, he falls to his knees, he looks petrified.
“What have I done?… What have I fucking done?…”
At the edge a man is leaning forward, he holds a hand firmly in his own hands, blood flowing from his shoulder to the hand he so desperately grasps at. The other man is dangling in space. He smiles.
“Sir, please, let me fly…”
“Never… let you go… Ianto…”
